Respiratory muscle training (RMT) is a technique that aims to improve function of your respiratory muscles through specific exercises. RMT involves a series of exercises – breathing and other – to increase the strength and endurance of your respiratory muscles and, in turn, improve respiration (breathing).

RMT was developed for people who suffer from chronic breathing conditions, such as asthma , bronchitis, emphysema, and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). However, other people to whom breathing is critical to their performance – including athletes, musicians, and actors – have adapted this technique.

What to Expect

During a normal breath, you typically only use about 10 to 15 percent of your usable lung capacity. With RMT, you can learn to increase the amount of your usable lung capacity. During RMT, you may use a special breathing device to help you breathe more deeply and mindfully. You will learn how to take deeper breaths. You will work with a specialist to learn these techniques, and you should also expect to practice on your own at home each day for best results.
