Pediatric nephrologists at University of Miami Health System provide comprehensive care for children’s kidney conditions. Our team provides compassionate, kid-friendly services in a family-friendly setting. We support your child as they grow, and help make the transition to adult care as smooth as possible when needed.

Our team of seven board-certified pediatric nephrologists sees patients in several convenient locations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties. We’re skilled in treating and managing all kidney conditions in children — from chronic kidney disease to acute (occurring suddenly) injury or illness. We use innovative treatments to heal and preserve kidney function, and we’re recognized for our high success rates in kidney transplant.

From January 2013 to December 2016, we performed the largest volume of living and deceased donor kidney transplants in Florida, and we’re the third largest combined adult and pediatric kidney transplant center in the United States. In the same period, we ranked fifth in pediatric (under age 18) kidney transplant volumes in the U.S. Learn more about the Miami Transplant Institute.

In addition to treating children with kidney conditions, our doctors are also involved in research studies to discover new treatments in the field of nephrology. This involvement allows us to be aware of and offer new treatments more quickly and safely than other facilities in our area. At any given time, we are participating in more than 10 different trials of major clinical significance for the management of various kidney conditions.

Why Choose UHealth?

World-class health care for children. Children and their families come from all over the world to receive top-quality care from our compassionate team of pediatric specialists. Your child receives personalized attention from doctors who are sought out for their expertise.

Recognized for excellence in treating kidney conditions. We’ve been recognized for our expertise in dealing with acute renal replacement therapies in young children and infants, as well as the management of severe urinary tract obstruction in developing fetuses and in newborns. We work closely with our highly skilled pediatric urology team to deliver comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for your child.

In 2016, the state of Florida renewed our designation as a Comprehensive Chronic Kidney Failure Center (CCKFC). We are one of only three such centers in the state. Our program has consistently ranked among the nation’s top pediatric nephrology programs for the past nine years by U.S. News & World Report. We’re proud to have received the best rank in the state of Florida.

Pediatric Dialysis Unit provides kid-friendly care. Our Pediatric Dialysis Unit is one of the largest in the nation solely dedicated to children. We have eight hemodialysis stations, and our highly skilled nursing staff provides more than 3,000 treatments a year. Our pediatric nephrologists monitor each child to ensure they’re responding well to dialysis treatment, and we hold monthly multidisciplinary patient reviews in accordance with national guidelines. We also help connect children and families with essential psychosocial support during their treatment. We have experience with all the various extracorporeal modalities of therapy including continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), peritoneal dialysis, and total plasma exchange (TPE). These therapies are used in the acute settings and home hemodialysis/peritoneal dialysis for the chronic management of children with end stage renal disease.

Pair Donor Exchange Program for kidney transplant. If your child needs a kidney transplant, we’re experts in transplant and follow-up care. Our Pair Donor Exchange Program can help shorten your child’s wait time for a kidney. This program increases the opportunity for children who are incompatible with a majority of donor kidneys to be transplanted. Because the child receives a kidney from a living donor, they will usually have a better outcome.

Annual Pediatric Nephrology Seminar held every March. Celebrating our 45th year in 2018, this unique international gathering of nephrology specialists is an important forum for exchanging the latest innovations and research findings in pediatric nephrology. Pediatric and adult nephrologists, pediatricians, internists, general practitioners, pediatric urologists, and transplant surgeons from throughout the United States and the world attend this annual event.

HealthySteps program helps children meet milestones. All our general pediatrics offices use the HealthySteps program to ensure that children are developing appropriately for their age — physically, emotionally, and psychologically. When there are issues or concerns, we work closely with patients and their families to connect them with support resources. We’re the only academic health center in South Florida with developmental and behavioral pediatric specialists  on staff.
