A vasectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that results in male sterilization and permanent birth control. After a vasectomy, a man will no longer be able to father a child.

During a vasectomy, the tube that allows your sperm to travel from the testicles to the penis (the vas deferens) is cut. The tube is then sealed or tied off so sperm cannot get to the penis. When you ejaculate after a vasectomy, your ejaculate contains no sperm and you cannot father a child.

Who Is a Candidate?

Any man who does not wish to father children is a candidate for vasectomy.

What to Expect

Vasectomies are simple procedures performed in a doctor’s office. You won’t need anesthesia for the procedure, but the surgical area will be numbed.

Your vasectomy will take less than 30 minutes. You may spend an hour or so recovering at the doctor’s office before going home to rest. You will be able to return to sexual activity within a week.

Our urologists can use a “no-needle” approach to anesthesia and a “no-scalpel” technique to complete a vasectomy. This can speed up recovery time and help you feel more comfortable about your procedure. You should ask your physician about these techniques before your vasectomy.

In some cases, a vasectomy can be reversed if you wish to father children.
