Robustiano (Ruben) de la Vega Jr. joined Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 2007. He primarily directs the management and operational functions of the Quality Management (2007) and the Medical Staff Office (2012). Ruben leads the constant-state-of-readiness preparations and implementation of activities related to accreditation and regulatory agency site visits.
With over 30-years of acute care, corporate setting, and ambulatory care leadership experience, he competently integrates and executes components of patient safety, quality control and performance improvement programs to promote a safety-supportive culture and clinical service excellence. Ruben has successfully led the Hospital’s Joint Commission/Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services surveys for re-accreditation in 2008, 2011 and 2014.
Prior to joining Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 2007, Ruben held leadership positions at Tenet South Florida HealthSystem – Palmetto General Hospital and Hialeah Hospital; The Mount Sinai Medical Center (New York City); Federation of Jewish Philanthropies; and The New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center. He earned his BSN and MSN (specialty in Nursing Administration and sub-specialty in HIV/AIDS) at Hunter College, New York City. Ruben received numerous recognitions for academic excellence (Deans’ Lists, Sigma Theta Tau – Nursing Honor Society, and Cum Laude) as well as professional Nursing Leadership Excellence awards.
