Myasthenia gravis is when there is weakness and rapid fatigue in any of the muscles that you can normally control. This condition is caused by a breakdown in the normal communication that occurs between your nerves and muscles.
Symptoms of myasthenia gravis include:
- Changes in speech, such as your voice sounding very soft or nasal
- Difficulty swallowing
- Double vision (diplopia)
- Drooping of one or both eyelids (ptosis)
- Frequent choking while eating or drinking
- Loss of facial expressions
- Muscle weakness that worsens over time (but usually improves with rest)
Comprehensive Exam - Your doctor will conduct a thorough physical examination– as well as gather a complete health history – to help determine if you have myasthenia gravis. Your doctor will check your reflexes, muscle strength and tone, senses of touch and sights, and your coordination and balance.
Electromyography (EMG) - This test measures the electrical activity between your brain and muscle. Your doctor inserts a tiny wire electrode through your skin and into a muscle to test for electrical impulses.
Imaging - Your doctor may order a computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan to see if you have a tumor or other abnormality that could be causing similar symptoms.
Cholinesterase Inhibitors - These medications can help improve communication between your nerves and muscles, which may help decrease the symptoms of this condition.
Other Medications - Your doctor may prescribe other types of medicine – including corticosteroids or immunosuppressants – to reduce the effects of this condition. While there is no known cure, the symptoms can usually be managed.
