Global Oncology and International Programs

The purpose of the Global Oncology Research Postdoctoral Associate position is for a physician to specialize in the emerging discipline of Global Oncology and lead cancer control efforts, improve clinical and health outcomes, conduct economic research and advocate for improvements upon their return to their home countries. The Global Oncology Research Postdoctoral Associate is a one-year training program for one physician from a low- and middle-income (LMIC) country in Latin America and the Caribbean. The program begins July 2018. Upon their return home, the Global Oncology Research Postdoctoral Associate will have expert leadership in the discipline and act as an example for their fellow students and teachers, government representatives, institutions of medical care, and partner collaborators. This opportunity is intended to support a physician researcher in low resource settings on scientific questions specific to those settings. This research has the potential to offer “reverse innovation” insights that could influence practice in a wide range of practice settings. Research may entail but is not limited to: health systems, outcomes and economics in research related to cancer control and care, implementation research, prevention and palliative care, innovation in care delivery, and translational research. The final program will be designed to fulfill specific needs of the candidate, country, and health systems of the country of origin. Duties may include, but are not limited to: developing an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of cancer care, developing research skills, which optimize a compassionate and humanistic approach to cancer control and delivery in a LMIC, developing and initiating research projects (with the guidance of faculty), attending and participating in educational activities — journal clubs, hematology/oncology didactics, cancer round table conference, multidisciplinary conference, bone marrow conference, tumor boards, and conferences, learning to critically analyze medical literature, becoming aware of ethical issues that arise in end-of-life care, and attending program classes.
