Hives are triggered by an allergic reaction, causing your skin to develop bumps or rashes. Hives can cover most of your body or just one area, and they can develop right away or form over several days. They usually go away within 24 hours. Chronic hives can last for months or years.

The bumps or rashes associated with hives are typically:

  • Red or flesh-colored
  • Intensely itchy
  • Feel warm, burn, or hurt
  • Roughly oval or shaped like a worm
  • A few millimeters to several inches in size

Treatments

Antihistamine Medication
Your dermatologist may recommend that you take antihistamine medication to help control the itching related to your hives.

Ointment or Cream
Your dermatologist may prescribe a topical ointment, cream, or lotion that you will apply directly to your skin.

Medication Injection
Your dermatologist may give you an injection of medication to treat the allergic reaction that is causing your hives.

Tests

Physical Exam
Through a medical examination of your skin, we can accurately diagnose and determine the best way to treat your hives.
