NCI Designation
After years of preparation, in September 2018 Sylvester applied for NCI designation. The 1,300 page application, completed by a team of Sylvester physicians, researchers, and staff, led by Sylvester Director Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., highlighted some of Sylvester's most impactful programs, including cancer prevention, research, training and education, and cancer survivorship.
Innovative Cancer
Prevention Initiatives
Sylvester's innovative cancer prevention initiatives help reduce cancer incidence throughout South Florida and beyond.
One major effort has been Sylvester's Firefighter Cancer Initiative. Since 2015, the Initiative has been identifying novel, evidence-based methods for reducing risk and deploying them to fire departments across the state of Florida. Another has been the Sylvester Game Changer™ Vehicle, which provides free information, screenings, and prevention strategies to medically underserved communities across South Florida.
Patient-Focused
Cancer Research
Teams of physicians and scientists work together to move discoveries from Sylvester's labs to patients and out into the community. As the home to South Florida's only Phase 1 Clinical Trials program, Sylvester offers novel treatments and hope to patients with rare forms of cancer.
Sylvester has expanded this program, more than tripling the amount of interventional treatment trials since 2012.
Training and
Education
As part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Sylvester is the only university-based comprehensive cancer center in South Florida. This means our physician-scientists are preparing the next generation of cancer doctors and researchers from high school through residency and fellowship. For example, Sylvester is among the first cancer centers in the country to develop an oncology fellowship program for nurse practitioners that provides specialized training in care.
Additionally, through our Global Oncology and International Programs, Sylvester is sharing our knowledge and expertise to help alleviate inequalities in cancer control in low- and middle-income countries throughout the western hemisphere.

Survivorship
Sylvester's Cancer Survivorship and Translational Behavioral Research program enhances and expands our exceptional survivorship care and translational behavioral research in cancer survivors, their families, and communities. We've discovered a survivor's unique medical and psychosocial needs are best addressed with a holistic, evidence-based, and long-term care approach that incorporates state-of-the-art research.
Through research efforts and cancer support services, we address the social, economic, and physical effects of cancer experienced by our pediatric and adult patients.
