Research shows that both the process and the product of therapeutic creativity are beneficial. Using the arts for expressive, creative, and reflective purposes can reduce anxiety and stress, improve your mood and enhance the quality of life and treatment outcomes by addressing your physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs
You do not need to have any previous experience or skill in the creative arts to participate in our Arts and Medicine program. The only thing you need to participate is an open mind and willingness to try something new.
Offered through Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Cancer Support Services, we offer the Arts and Medicine Program in both the outpatient and inpatient setting for people with any condition or undergoing any type of treatment – along with their family and caregivers. We encourage people of all artistic abilities to join us. We are always seeking volunteers and volunteer artists for this innovative program.
How Arts and Medicine Works
Patients who engage in Arts and Medicine may experience an elevated quality of life and improve their physical and psychosocial health. Patients report that the arts-based activities help them experience relaxation and enjoyment in an environment that can be stressful.
Arts and Medicine groups allow you to connect with other patients in a creative, supportive environment. Patients are also able to share the creative experience with caregivers, which allows for increased bonding.
Patients in the hospital can also enjoy a variety of creative exercises right at your bedside, including designing watercolor abstract monoprints, silk wall hangings, greeting cards, or beading and jewelry making. We also offer painting, drawing, beading, meditative mandalas, and collaging.
You can create your own art using whichever art medium is most appealing to you. In addition, we have trained volunteers who can bring our fully stocked, mobile “Art Kart” right into your room.
