Dr. Rao's research program is focused around developing statistical methods for analyzing data focusing on issues related to cancer precision medicine (genomic modeling), pharamacogenomics, small area estimation and modeling cancer disparity data. 


Specific methodologies that Dr. Rao has developed include the Bayesian ANOVA for microarrays (BAM) methodology (www.bamarray.com) for the analysis of group-based cancer genomic data, local sparse bump hunting algorithms for identifying informative subgroups of patients (www.primsrc.com), classified mixed model prediction (CMMP) methods for operationalizing precision medicine based predictions, and robust methods for small area estimation including the observed best prediction estimator.
