Interventional radiologists use selective nerve root block (SNRB) to both diagnose and treat pain in the lower back and leg. An SNRB uses an injection of a numbing medicine and steroid into a specific nerve root that exits the spinal cord. The procedure can be performed in the cervical (neck), thoracic (chest), or lumbar (lower back) area.
