Some women may be at a higher risk for ovarian cancer due to medical or family history. While being at higher risk doesn’t mean you will get cancer, regular screening and follow-up can help you identify cancer early and receive effective treatment. The experts at the University of Miami Health Ovarian Cancer Screening Clinic can help put your mind at ease and provide quick, safe, and effective treatment when needed.

Who is a Candidate?

If you have a family history of ovarian cancer, you may benefit from care and testing at the Ovarian Cancer Screening Clinic.

What to Expect

At your first appointment, you will have a full evaluation to determine your risk for ovarian cancer. Your evaluation will include:

  • A physical and pelvic exam
  • An assessment of your medical and family history
  • Ultrasound to examine the ovaries and uterus

Based on your test results, your physician will create a screening plan to fit your needs. You may also need genetic counseling to check for the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.

An ultrasound or blood test may be recommended every six to 12 months for women who are high risk. Your physician can also discuss the risks and benefits of having your ovaries and fallopian tubes removed. The decision to undergo surgery is highly personal and will impact your ability to have children.
