A tic is a repeated, quick movement (motor tic) or sound (vocal tic) that a person makes that they cannot control. Some common types of motor tics include:

  • Eye blinking
  • Facial grimacing
  • Head twitching
  • Nose wrinkling
  • Lip biting
  • Shoulder shrugging

Some common types of vocal tics include:

  • Barking
  • Coughing
  • Grunting
  • Hissing
  • Sniffling
  • Throat cleaning

Treatments for Tics

Reduce Stress
Being in stressful situations can make tics worse, so try to avoid stressful situations as much as possible.

Get Adequate Sleep
Making sure you get enough sleep enough night can help reduce the number of tics you have.

Botox Injections
A Botox (Botulinum toxin) injection placed directly into the affected muscle can help reduce tics.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Your specialist may suggest you undergo CBT to help you manage the symptoms of your tics from a psychological standpoint.

Comprehensive Exam
Your specialist will conduct a comprehensive physical and mental examination – including gathering a thorough health history – to diagnose a tic.
