In men with Peyronie’s disease, painful plaques (lumps) develop underneath the skin of the penis. These hard plaques can cause the penis to curve. These plaques are not tumors or sexually transmitted disease, and they can lead to painful or soft erections and sexual dysfunction.

Your risk for Peyronie’s disease increases as you age. Though it may be difficult to mention this condition to your physician, you don’t have to live with the stress of Peyronie’s disease. A physician can help you.

Tests

Physical Exam
Your doctor can typically diagnose Peyronie’s disease with a physical exam since lumps can often be felt beneath the skin.

Ultrasound
Your doctor may also use an ultrasound to more closely examine the plaques.

X-rays
Your doctor may take an X-ray to check for calcification (build-up of calcium) related to Peyronie’s disease.

Treatments

Medicines
Some medicines taken as pills can help prevent Peyronie’s disease from getting worse.

Injections
An FDA-approved injection can break down scar tissue in the penis caused by Peyronie’s disease. With less scar tissue, you may experience less pain and less curvature of the penis.

Penile Rod Implant
For men with both erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease, semi-rigid penile implant rods can help you maintain an erection. These rods are implanted during surgery and allow the penis to be bent as needed.

Inflatable Penile Implant
If you have erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease, you may benefit from an inflatable penile implant. During surgery, your urologist inserts inflatable cylinders into your penis. These cylinders can be filled with fluid to create an erection, and then fluid can be released using a valve implanted into the scrotum.
