Who we are

The Cleft Lip/Cleft Palate Program offers comprehensive care for children with cleft lip or cleft palate by a team of professionals with specialty expertise and interest.

A child born with a separation in the upper lip is said to have a cleft lip. A similar birth defect in the roof of the mouth, or palate, is called a cleft palate. Cleft lip and/or palate are among the most common craniofacial conditions in the United States, affecting one out of every 700 newborns. These congenital differences create extraordinary challenges for kids and their families, both emotional and financial.

The South Florida Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial hospital has provided care for patients with isolated cleft lip and/or palate, as well as those with associated congenital anomalies since 1951. It is regionally and nationally recognized as a Florida Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association Team.

Although plastic surgery provides the basis for correcting these defects, the complex needs of a child with cleft lip or cleft palate are best met when cared for by an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals.

What we do

Our experienced, multidisciplinary team is committed to deliver individualized, compassionate, patient-centered, comprehensive long term care for our patients and their families.
