ADVANCED HEART FAILURE

High Performing Hospitals U.S. News & World Report 2023-2024 - Heart Failure | American Heart Association - Silver Plus

At UHealth, you have access to experienced and dedicated specialists in advanced heart therapies.

Our Heart Failure Innovation and Treatment Program provides access to leading-edge therapies, including new medicines, innovative devices, remote monitoring and disease-management strategies for heart failure. We take on complex heart failure and if medical and device therapy isn't appropriate or working, we can assess whether heart transplantation or left ventricular assist devices should be considered. As a leading academic-based health system, UHealth can provide more options beyond what is generally available.

Why Choose UHealth?

Tools for care

Multidisciplinary care by recognized specialists in their field. In many cases, the care of patients with advanced heart failure requires the expertise of many specialties, such as cardiothoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac rehabilitation and pulmonary medicine. At UHealth, patients receive multidisciplinary care from recognized specialists in their field who communicate and collaborate to ensure a personalized treatment plan. The Advanced Heart Failure Team works closely with UHealth's interventional and structural heart experts, led by Dr. Mauricio Cohen, which provides advanced interventional and complex procedures for patients with advanced heart failure. Many patients with heart failure also have abnormal lung function. The Advanced Heart Failure team also collaborates with the Pulmonary Hypertension team to provide state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment. Our providers work together to improve and prolong the lives of patients living with heart failure.

UHealth is a leader in advancing the science of medicine. What we are working on — groundbreaking and lifesaving research. In addition to conducting advanced research to restore heart muscle function, our physician-scientists are investigating innovative treatments and devices, the BaroStim implant, papillary muscle sling, the V-wave interatrial shunt, Carillon right-heart transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) device, and the Cordella pulmonary artery pressure sensor system. We also have active FDA-approved device programs including neuromodulation (Barostim) and cardiac contractility modulation (Optimizer), which can improve exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with heart failure. As a leading academic medical center, UHealth's options for novel treatments and investigational therapies go beyond what is generally available.

Treatments

With the use of today's treatment options — including prescription medications, medical devices, surgical measures and lifestyle modifications — the majority of heart failure patients do not progress to the most severe (and most life-threatening) stage of the syndrome. With an appropriate disease management program, many patients can recover heart function, and some are able to enter remission with normal heart function.

MEDICATIONS

Most of the medications prescribed for heart failure work to re-establish the normal function of your body’s hormones and neurologic systems that contribute to worsening heart failure. These medications can improve cardiac, neurological and hormonal functions, which contribute to the quality of life. Many of them can improve survival rates for those living with heart failure.

DEVICES

Devices can include biventricular pacing/cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), an implantable cardioverter defibrillator and ventricular assist devices (VADs). Additionally, other implantable devices, such as the Barostim Neo, the Optimizer and the Mitraclip, can help your heart and circulatory system function more efficiently.
