Innovator's Award
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is proud to announce Dr. Rosa Ana Tang, MD, MPH, MBA, FAAO, as the inaugural recipient of the Digital EyeCon Innovators Award, recognizing a lifetime of pioneering contributions to teleophthalmology, digital health innovation, and global vision equity. She is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained neuro-ophthalmologist with a distinguished academic and clinical career spanning several decades. She has held faculty appointments across the University of Texas system and currently serves in multiple academic and clinical leadership roles in Houston, Texas. Her work consistently bridges clinical excellence, public health, and technology-enabled care delivery.
A nationally and internationally recognized educator and scholar, Dr. Tang has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, lectured extensively worldwide, and contributed to landmark clinical trials that have advanced the standard of care in neuro-ophthalmology and thyroid eye disease. Her research interests include telemedicine and digital health, reflecting a long-standing commitment to expanding access to specialty eye care through innovative models of care delivery. A former board member of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA), she founded the International Consortium for Ocular Telehealth (ICOT) in 1998—the first special interest group in the field and the predecessor to ATA’s current Ocular Telehealth SIG.
Beyond her academic impact, Dr. Tang is widely regarded as a visionary mentor and advocate for health equity. Her early adoption of telemedicine, and her passion for democratizing access to vision care, have inspired generations of clinicians and digital health leaders worldwide. Through the Digital EyeCon Innovators Award, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute honors Dr. Tang’s enduring legacy as a pioneer, educator, and catalyst for transformation in virtual eye care.
