As a University of Miami Health System CTU patient liaison, your role will include socializing with and supporting patients and their families during infusion treatments. You’ll assist with enhancing patient comfort, including picking up lunch or retrieving snacks, water, juice, or a blanket. You’ll also ensure essential items are within the patient’s reach, including the nurse call light, TV control, telephone, tissue box, and meal tray.
You’ll also be responsible for:
- Assisting patients back and forth to the bathroom
- Cleaning chairs and toys after each patient visit
- Completing other miscellaneous tasks as needed by the oncology staff/floors
- Picking up prescribed medication at the central pharmacy or tube station
- Restocking supplies
- Transporting specimens to pick-up site or lab (specimens collected by RNs only)
The ideal individual for this role should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and compassion for patient needs. The volunteer should be able to learn to navigate the hospital independently and follow directions that staff members give.
You must be able to walk and stand without limitations, as well as push patients in wheelchairs. Volunteers must commit to one three-hour shift per week.
