Research Focus
The Advanced Imaging and Artificial Intelligence (AI)² Lab is dedicated to advancing the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of glaucoma and other neurodegenerative eye diseases. Led by Dr. Felipe A. Medeiros, MD, PhD, a world-recognized leader in glaucoma research, the lab is based at the McKnight Vision Research Center and focuses on developing innovative, clinically actionable technologies to improve patient outcomes and preserve vision through earlier detection, improved monitoring, and neuroprotective strategies.
A central emphasis of the (AI)² Lab is the development of novel AI- and data-driven algorithms that integrate advanced ocular imaging and functional testing to improve diagnosis, risk stratification, and detection of disease progression. The lab leverages cutting-edge imaging technologies, including optical coherence tomography, adaptive optics, and multimodal retinal imaging, together with large-scale clinical datasets and biomarker information derived from genetics, epigenetics, and bioinformatics to refine prognostic models, improve clinical trial endpoints, and accelerate therapeutic development.
In parallel, the lab investigates how eye disease affects real-world function and quality of life. Using immersive virtual reality environments and advanced driving simulation, the (AI)² Lab studies the impact of visual impairment on everyday activities, performance, and safety, enabling outcome measures that extend beyond traditional clinical tests.
