Bascom Palmer Eye Institute provides state-of-the-art emergency eye care at our Miami location. Eye emergencies range from infections to trauma and, if untreated, can lead to visual loss or other health problems. A trained ophthalmic team consisting of board-certified physicians, ophthalmologists pursuing subspecialty fellowship training, ophthalmology residents, registered nurses, ophthalmic technicians and patient access staff is available to diagnose, care, and treat emergency eye problems. 

Seek emergency eye care for the following symptoms:

  • Severe eye injury
  • Change in eyesight or sudden loss of all or part of your vision
  • Severe or sharp pain in or around your eye
  • Flashes of light 
  • Sudden increase in amount of flashes or floaters
  • Redness with pain
  • Sudden onset of double vision
  • Curtain or veil covering part of your vision
  • Tearing associated with pain in or around your eye
  • Severe pain or pressure sensation after an eye injection, surgery, or trauma
  • Chemical contact with your eye that causes eye irritation
  • Bulging eye

How to Prevent Eye Injuries

Eye injuries can be largely prevented by following the tips below.

  • Wear protective eyewear when doing activities that involve objects moving at high speed, during high impact sports, or when using powerful chemicals
  • Wear protective eyewear if you are making home improvements, mowing the lawn, and trimming plants and trees to prevent debris from getting into your eyes 
  • Maintain clean hands
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes
  • Change contact lenses and contact lens solution as instructed
  • Do not sleep wearing your contact lenses
  • Limit the use of sharp objects by young children
  • Always use sunglasses with UV protection when outdoors
  • Never place a part of your body directly over a firework or hold a firework in your hand when lighting. Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.
