IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - The 2026 residency interviews will follow a virtual format in line with AUPO and SF Match policy.
The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute will not use signals. We review all applications. Sending your application to us serves as a strong signal of your interest in our program.
Applications for the residency program must be submitted through the Central Application Service (CAS) of the San Francisco Matching Program. We do not require additional materials or paperwork. Only applicants who meet the eligibility and selection requirements will be considered.
Eligibility and Selection
The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Residency Program selects only from among the pool of eligible applicants and evaluates each applicant based on their preparedness, ability, academic credentials, communication skills and personal qualities such as motivation, honesty and integrity. The program does not discriminate regarding sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability or veteran status.
Program Requirements for Applicants
- Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
- Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States jurisdiction. - All applicants must successfully complete Step 1 and Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination prior to starting the program. Submission of USMLE Step 2 CK is required by October 1 of the application year. We do not have a minimum USMLE score requirement.
All applications received by September 15, 2026, will be considered and should be as complete as possible (including all letters of reference). The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute reviews ALL applications received by this date. Invitations to interview will be extended approximately by mid-November. Residency interviews will be held on December 9, 10, and 11, 2026.
We plan to offer an optional “open house" for applicants on January 8, 2027. This will be held after we submit our final rank list but before the applicant rank list is due. We will share more details at a later time.
A selection committee reviews all applicants, selects applicants for interview, participates in the interview process and in the final choice of applicants.
Additional Application Information for Bascom Palmer BRIO Research Track
Applications to the Bascom Palmer BRIO (Building Resident Investigators in Ophthalmology) Research Track (SF Match Program ID: PR12027) must be submitted through the San Francisco Matching Program's Central Application Service (CAS). Applicants interested in the BRIO Research Track must also apply to the Bascom Palmer Ophthalmology Residency Program (SF Match Program ID: PR04019).
Applicants to the BRIO Research Track should demonstrate a strong interest in research, academic medicine, and ophthalmic investigation. Prior research experience is encouraged and will be considered in the holistic application review. The ideal candidate for this program is one who has made a significant effort to contribute to improving the field through original investigative study (biomedical engineering, big data, bench/laboratory science, etc) and has demonstrated potential to make continued meaningful scientific discovery through residency and beyond.
Applicants to the BRIO Research Track will be asked to submit a supplemental application addressing past scientific achievements and future career goals. This supplemental application will be distributed to all who apply after the application deadline. Individuals selected to interview for this track will interview with both the traditional residency selection committee and the BRIO residency selection committee. These may be on different days.
