Jean-Marie Parel, Ing., ETS-G, Ph.D.
Jean-Marie Parel, Ing., ETS-G, Ph.D., was a pioneering biomedical engineer and visionary inventor whose groundbreaking work transformed ophthalmic research, surgery, and patient care. Over an extraordinary 60-year career, as the founder and director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Ophthalmic Biophysics Center (OBC), he invented or improved more than 350 medical instruments while serving as the Henri & Flore Lesieur Chair in Ophthalmology. Dr. Parel passed away on August 10, 2025, at the age of 82.
His innovations included developing the world’s smallest motorized scissors and creating devices for vitrectomies that revolutionized eye surgery worldwide. These advancements have improved the lives of countless patients and continue to shape the practice of ophthalmology today.
Dr. Parel’s dedication to Bascom Palmer and the field of ophthalmology was unparalleled. Until his final days, he worked alongside his research team, exemplifying the passion and commitment that defined his remarkable career. His legacy extends far beyond scientific achievements—he was a mentor, collaborator, and dear friend who touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
Dr. Jean-Marie Parel Ophthalmic Biophysics Program Endowment
In honor of Dr. Parel, Bascom Palmer established the Dr. Jean-Marie Parel Ophthalmic Biophysics Program Endowment which supports the activities of the OBC. The OBC is a basic science laboratory specializing in biophysics, bioengineering, lasers and drug delivery. It also functions as a service laboratory for the design of devices for a wide range of research needs, as well as technical maintenance, and repair of clinical and research equipment.
Celebrating Dr. Parel’s Life and Legacy
On November 11, 2025, more than 150 people gathered at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to celebrate Dr. Parel’s life and legacy. The event took place on the same day Dr. Parel was scheduled to deliver the annual Edward W.D. Norton Lecture, an honor reserved for exceptional ophthalmologists and vision scientists whose work has made a significant impact in the field.
Dr. Norton, Bascom Palmer’s founding chair, and Dr. Parel shared a close professional and personal relationship; they were not only colleagues and collaborators, but also dear friends who inspired each other and contributed together to advancements in ophthalmology.
Jean-Marie Parel’s impact will live on through the countless lives he improved, the innovations he created, and the inspiration he provided. He will be deeply missed.
