Why Would Someone Need an Amputation?

If infection or disease affects your body part in a way that makes it impossible to repair or endangers your life, doctors may remove the body part by surgical amputation. The surgical strategy is determined by the damaged body part, the amputation's cause, and the degree of bone and tissue damage.

Causes include:

  • Disease: These include diseases of the blood vessels (peripheral vascular disease or PVD), cancer, infection, osteomyelitis (an infection in the bones), as well as diabetes or blood clots
  • Trauma: Approximately 45% of all amputations are caused by a traumatic injury, which may be from a motor vehicle, occupational, industrial, or combat injury

We aim to get patients back to living their best possible life and remembering that they're valued members of society. That's why we support patients with coordinated care throughout their journey.
