Bascom Palmer Visiting Medical Student Scholarship

Bascom Palmer Visiting Medical Student Scholarship in Ophthalmology

The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute offers funded opportunities to spark interest in ophthalmology among those who are financially disadvantaged or those who identify as under-represented in medicine. This is in line with our goals of increasing diversity in the field of ophthalmology while also mentoring students for successful careers in ophthalmology. Students will be exposed to the vast Bascom Palmer network of faculty while also gaining access to the vast educational resources offered by Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

We are providing stipends of $2,000.00 (4-week rotation) and $1,000.00 (2-week rotation) to qualified students to help defray the cost of the away rotation.

The two to four weeks clinical elective in ophthalmology is geared toward medical students interested in obtaining an in depth understanding of fundamental ophthalmology. Students will rotate through the emergency room, operating room, and various subspecialty clinics. Students will also be assigned to a faculty mentor who will meet weekly to offer guidance for a career in ophthalmology.

Program requirements:

  • Active enrollment in an accredited medical school as a full-time student.
  • Applications from those who are financially disadvantaged (participating in the AAMC Fee Assistance Program) and/or under-represented in medicine (defined as: Black (African/African American), Latino/Hispanic (Mexican American, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Central American, South American), Native American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, or LGBTQ+) are highly encouraged.
  • Successful completion/submission of the requirements for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) portal.

The program director will review all completed applications (including all requested supporting documents and identification of a date range for the elective experience with the course coordinator). Once selected, the student must proceed to apply through the VSLO portal for the ophthalmology elective MDR860.

All application materials must be submitted to yxs696@med.miami.edu
