Student Nurse Intern FAQs

How long is a student nurse internship? Page 1

The length of our student nurse internship varies based on several factors, including the timing of the student’s acceptance into the program, as well as their successful completion of RN licensure requirements and departmental clinical competencies. Interns receive ongoing training and support throughout the 12-month program as they prepare to apply and transition to our nurse residency program.

What are the expected work hours? Page 1

Student nurse interns are required to work one shift per week: eight (8) hours in an outpatient setting and 12 hours in an inpatient setting.

Will I rotate through different departments or units during my internship? Page 1

Applicants are encouraged to provide input on their specialty preferences and are assigned to one specific area for the duration of their internship while considering the needs of the department.

What is the nurse intern to preceptor ratio? Page 1

Student nurse interns will initially be paired with a certified nursing assistant to build and master their skills before starting their preceptorship period. After mastering these skills, the student nurse intern is assigned to one RN preceptor, accompanying and assisting them with patient care throughout their shift.

What support can I expect to receive? Page 1

The RN preceptor guides the student nurse intern to provide insight and support for tasks, opportunities and benefits of working on that unit. The nurse educator has regular check-ins with the student, nursing manager and preceptor to further build and support their learning needs and skills in preparation for an exceptional nursing career.
