Volunteer Tasks
- Offer compassionate companionship to individuals who are experiencing illness, grief, or difficult life transitions and decision making.
- Listen actively and offer spiritual encouragement or support without proselytizing.
- Provide spiritual resources (e.g., prayers, scripture readings, religious texts, or rituals) based on the individual's faith tradition or spiritual needs.
- Assist in facilitating religious services or spiritual activities as needed.
- Collaborate with the spiritual care team, including chaplains and other volunteers, to ensure holistic care.
- Respect the diverse spiritual and religious backgrounds of individuals served, fostering an inclusive and non-judgmental environment.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect for the dignity of those receiving care.
- Document visits or interactions per the organization's policies.
- Aid in carrying out religious/spiritual practices, ceremonies, and traditions for patients and family members.
Volunteer Training Provided
In addition to standard UHealth new volunteer orientation, volunteers will receive customer service training, a hospital tour, orientation to floors where volunteers will visit, and a review of Infection Control precautions.
Physical Requirements
Physically able to stand and walk up to 4 hours at a time.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Active listener with the ability to remain present and supportive during emotional conversations.
- Ability to offer non-judgmental support, regardless of personal spiritual or religious beliefs.
- Understanding spiritual care principles and an openness to learning more about various spiritual practices.
- Prior experience in spiritual care, counseling, or related fields.
- Pastoral care experience of a minimum of 5 years.
- Preferred volunteers should have a master’s degree; however, bachelor’s degree would be considered.
- Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) units are preferable but not required.
- Proof of Ordination, Endorsement or Reference from Denomination/Recognized Faith Community.
