A meningioma is a tumor that develops in the meninges (tissue that surrounds your brain and spinal cord). It is the most common type of tumor that can affect the brain, but it’s very slow growing. Many people with meningiomas may have no symptoms at all; their tumors are discovered on imaging scans for other issues.

When a meningioma becomes too large, it may press on the brain, nerves, or blood vessels, causing symptoms such as:

  • Headaches that grow more severe over time
  • Hearing loss
  • Loss of smell
  • Memory loss
  • Seizures
  • Vision changes, such as double or blurry vision
  • Weakness in your limbs

Neurosurgery experts at the University of Miami Health System offer advanced, comprehensive care for meningiomas, striving to relieve symptoms with minimal side effects.

Tests

Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan
A CT scan is an X-ray of your brain that doctors can view in individual slices to identify any meningiomas.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
An MRI is an imaging scan of your brain creates a highly detailed image of your brain, without using radiation.

Treatments

Medical Monitoring
Because meningiomas are slow growing, you may not need any treatment unless the tumor causes serious symptoms. Your doctor may suggest regular imaging scans to check the tumor’s growth.

Surgery
If your meningioma is causing symptoms, a neurosurgeon may remove all or part of the tumor during brain surgery.

Radiation Therapy
Your surgeon may recommend radiation therapy if your meningioma isn’t completely removed. Radiation therapy uses precisely aimed radiation to kill tumor cells.
