A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that normally hold it in place. Some of the most common types of hernias are:

  • Femoral (outer groin)
  • Hiatal (upper stomach)
  • Incisional (resulting from an incision)
  • Inguinal (inner groin)
  • Umbilical (belly button)

Your expert care team at the University of Miami Hernia Center is well respected for their experience, surgical experience, variety of available procedures, and leading-edge technology. We use a collaborative approach to ensure you have the best possible outcome for your hernia repair.

With a multidisciplinary approach, we tailor a personalized surgical plan that best suits your specific needs. You can be confident knowing that some of the top hernia repair surgeons in the country are handling your hernia treatment. Our experts have both the latest knowledge and extensive training in their specialty.

Who is a Candidate?

We offer laparoscopic or open hernia repair for the following types of hernias:

  • Femoral (inner thigh or groin) hernia
  • Inguinal (groin or pubic area) hernia
  • Lumbar (spine) hernia
  • Ventral (abdomen) hernia

Your specialist will explain your options and advise you on which type of procedure is the best fit for your situation and condition.

What to Expect

Hernia surgery is performed in the hospital, under general anesthesia (fully asleep). This procedure takes about four to five hours to complete. Most people stay in the hospital for four to five days following hernia repair surgery.

You can expect recovery to take six to eight weeks. You won’t be able to lift anything that weighs more than five pounds until your surgeon clears you.

Treatments

Laparoscopic (Minimally Invasive) and Conventional (Open) Hernia Repair
Each patient will evaluated for their specific needs. We specialize in:

  • Abdominal wall reconstruction
  • Complicated mesh-related infections: caused by hernia repair
  • Hernias with enterocutaneous fistulas: abnormal connection between the intestinal tract or stomach and the skin, which causes stomach contents or intestines to leak through to the skin
  • Management of previous hernia repair: management of pain and hernia recurrence after previous repair

Abdominal Wall Reconstruction
We offer the following types of abdominal wall reconstruction:

  • Femoral (inner thigh or groin) hernia
  • Inguinal (groin or pubic area) hernia
  • Lumbar (spine) hernia
  • Ventral (abdomen) hernia

Your specialist will explain your options and advise you on which type of procedure is the best fit for your situation and condition.
