A hydrocele occurs when fluid gathers in the lining of the testes. This causes the scrotum to swell. It is more common in children than adults.

Hydroceles typically don’t cause pain and go away on their own. However, you should always see a doctor about scrotal swelling in case it is caused by a more serious condition. Experts at the Desai Sethi Urology Institute can help identify hydroceles and relieve pain.

Tests

Physical Exam
Your doctor may check for tenderness in your scrotum or abdomen. They may also shine a light through your scrotum to check for clear fluid.

Urine Tests
Your doctor may use a urine sample to check for infections that can cause swelling.

Blood Tests
Your doctor may take a sample of blood to identify infections that can cause swelling.

Ultrasound
Your doctor may use an ultrasound to check for hernias or other causes of scrotal swelling.

Treatments

Medical Monitoring
Most hydroceles go away on their own. Your doctor may schedule regular appointments to check on the hydrocele to ensure it is not growing.

Surgery
If a hydrocele does not go away on its own, you may need an outpatient procedure to remove the hydrocele.
