What should you eat at your age?

As you age and enter various stages of life (young adulthood, pregnancy, mid-life, menopause), your body needs different nutrients to feel and look your best. If you’re of a certain age, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that you can no longer “get away with” eating pizza and ice cream like a teenager. Aging bodies process and use calories, vitamins, fats, and proteins differently.

You may not know your body’s unmet nutritional needs until you gain unwanted weight, develop high cholesterol blood pressure, or become pre-diabetic. But, beyond disease prevention and management, your diet can also contribute to your mood and mental health; immune system; bone strength; sexual health; cognitive function; and the appearance of your hair, skin, and nails.

Nutritional Considerations for Women Ages 18–39 Page 1

Early adulthood is the perfect time to learn how to nourish yourself through your dietary choices. Learning to cook nutrient-rich meals at this age can prepare you for a lifetime of thoughtful dietary choices, portion control, and balanced nutrition.

This is also an excellent time to establish other healthy, long-term eating habits. Pay attention to when and why you choose to eat. Are you snacking out of boredom? Do you crave sugary or salty foods when you are sad, anxious, or on your period? Do you binge eat alone or overindulge when dining with friends? Do you use food to reward or punish yourself? Do you consider some foods “bad”?

Speaking with a professional specializing in diet and nutrition can help you create a healthier relationship with food and your body.

What can a registered dietitian (RD) do for you?

  • If you are pregnant or planning to conceive, an RD can help optimize your diet to support your body's needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding while aiding postpartum recovery.
  • For those with underlying health conditions or a family history of specific ailments, an RD can explain how diet choices can prevent, slow disease progression, and reduce symptoms.
  • Athletes or those looking to manage their weight can work with an RD to create a nutrition plan that supports their goals.
  • Busy moms can receive tips on how to prepare quick and nutritious meals.
  • Those interested in disease prevention can learn about the benefits of whole foods and establish realistic daily nutrition goals.
  • If you're concerned about vitamin deficiencies, an RD may recommend bloodwork.
  • A behavioral health care provider can help identify underlying issues for those struggling with disordered eating. At the same time, an RD can teach healthy eating habits and help develop a balanced diet plan.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in this age group. This means managing a healthy weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure can save your life. While the benefits of exercise can’t be overlooked, your diet also plays an essential role in supporting cardiovascular health.

What can a registered dietitian (RD) do for you?

An RD can continue to help you with all mentioned above (for women ages 18 to 39). It’s not too late to learn how to prep and cook quick and balanced meals for you and your family, confront unhealthy attitudes about food, raise the bar for your fitness goals, and utilize nutrition to maintain a healthy weight and support your mental health and emotional well-being.

In addition, a Nutrition Services provider can help you with the following:

  • Protect your cardiovascular health
  • Lower your risk factors for cancers, hypertension, diabetes, and other age-related diseases
  • Prevent bone loss and dental decay
  • Manage symptoms of autoimmune disorders
  • Reduce the severity of perimenopause symptoms
  • Vary your diet with new recipes

After menopause, your risk for heart disease is even higher due to hormonal changes. As a result, maintaining a healthy weight, cholesterol level, and blood pressure are more challenging than when you were younger but are more critical than ever.

What can a registered dietitian (RD) do for you?

In addition to all the above, an RD can help you learn how to cook nutritious meals, set new fitness goals, and utilize nutrition to maintain a healthy weight and support your mental and emotional well-being.

In addition, a Nutrition Services provider can help you:

  • reduce the severity of menopause symptoms
  • learn new ways to lose weight while going through menopause
  • support your cardiovascular health
  • lower your risk factors for age-related diseases, including cancers, hypertension, and diabetes
  • prevent bone loss and dental decay
  • manage symptoms of autoimmune disorders
  • vary your diet with new recipes

Suppose you have an underlying health condition (hypertension, cancer, bowel disease, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, or depression). In that case, an RD can explain how dietary choices can help slow disease progression and reduce symptom severity and frequency.

What you eat should not be based solely on your dress size.

Your muscles, organs, and bones need certain amounts of calories, fats (yes, fats are an essential nutrient in every diet), proteins, vitamins, and minerals to function properly. Let’s not forget your brain because these building blocks of nutrition also fuel your cognitive function. If you deprive yourself of enough calories and nutrients, your essential bodily functions — in addition to your energy level, sexual desire, and mood — will suffer.

The Nutrition Services providers at UHealth Comprehensive Women’s Health Alliance can support your overall health and wellness through evidence-based nutrition recommendations. Our registered dietitians will consider your age, underlying health conditions, other disease risk factors, and lifestyle to design a nutrition and/or meal plan to help you reach your goals. You can discuss your food preferences and gain exposure to new foods and recipes that are both nutritious and delicious.
