Cervical dysplasia is a condition in which the cervix develops abnormal cells. These cells may go away on their own, causing no health problems.

In other instances, these cells may be precancerous, indicating a higher risk for cervical cancer. To help catch this early on, the Dysplasia Clinic at University of Miami Health provides regular, recurring screenings to examine and remove abnormal cells, as well as check for other gynecologic conditions.

Who Is a Candidate?

Any woman who has had abnormal Pap smear results may benefit from regular care at the Dysplasia Clinic.

What to Expect

At the Dysplasia Clinic, a gynecologist will perform a pelvic exam and Pap smear to check for abnormal cells. You may also have a colposcopy (special magnifying instrument) to examine the cervix more closely for signs of disease, or test for the human papillomavirus (HPV, a condition that causes warts and can affect the cervix). If necessary, our gynecologist will remove a few cervical cells during a biopsy to examine in a lab.

Your gynecologist will discuss treatment options based on all your test results. Treatments can include monitoring your cervical health, surgery to remove abnormal cells, or laser therapy to destroy abnormal cells.
