Our cardiothoracic experts have a unique expertise which allows them to continue to pioneer and advance the latest diagnostic and surgical procedures. They realize that heart and chest problems are complex and need a special kind of management, so they look at the whole patient instead of just your heart. One procedure may fix the heart problem, but be toxic to other organs and the rest of the body. As the heart and lungs are connected to the entire body, our experts can put together a personalized team that can help manage the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, brain and other organs.

They perform the most complicated heart and chest procedures in the region. Their expertise and experience along with the great care teams provide the best outcomes for you and your loved ones. For that reason, UHealth is the best place to get a second opinion before you have any procedure done. We’re leading the way, and saving lives.

Discover the difference an academic-based heart and lung center can make for you. Contact us today to schedule a same day consultation and screening. We look forward to serving you.

  • Center for Women’s Heart Disease

When both research and expert clinical practice come together, you know you have the most up-to-date treatment possible for your specific condition, delivered in a setting in which all the different experts needed for comprehensive treatment come together.

Advanced heart failure therapies.  Leading-edge treatments include ventricular assist devices and heart transplant. For advanced heart disease, options for treatment go beyond what is available in the community to prolong life and give you or your loved one a second chance.

Multidisciplinary care by recognized specialists in their field. In complex cases, heart disease care may require the services of a cardiothoracic surgeon, an interventional cardiologist, a lung specialist, a diabetes specialist and a geneticist. Your doctors talk to each other and make sure all specialties involved in your care are on board with a unified treatment plan.

Personalized recommendations. Whether you have a familial predisposition to high cholesterol or other forms of heart disease, or just want to stay healthy long-term, we keep your goals in mind when developing your screening and treatment schedules.

High-tech imaging expertise. Distinguishing between normal and abnormal findings allows us to ensure a proper diagnosis and develop a personalized treatment plan for you.

Cardiac screening and rehabilitation. Besides screening athletes for participation in sport programs, we monitor risk factors and devise recovery programs for cardiac disease or events. If you have experienced a heart attack or undergone heart surgery, we coordinate your cardiac rehabilitation to return you to a safe level of functioning. If you have undetected risk factors, we can identify those and keep an eye on your progress.

  • Aortic Surgery

Our cardiothoracic surgeons perform advanced surgeries on the aorta (the artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body) to treat valve problems or aortic aneurysms (weak spots in the wall of the aorta).

  • Arrhythmia (Heart Rhythm) Surgery

Many minimally invasive or open-heart surgeries can treat abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and restore a normal heartbeat.

  • Adult Congenital Surgery

Some congenital heart defects may not be diagnosed until you are an adult. Our expert cardiothoracic surgeons can repair these heart defects.

  • Clinical Trials

Clinical trials include using new medicines or new surgical techniques to treat heart problems.

  • Catheter-Based Valve Replacements

In some cases, interventional cardiologists can use a minimally invasive approach to replace heart valves through a small incision in the groin.

  • Complex Valve Repair and Reconstruction

Our expert cardiothoracic surgeons use advanced techniques to repair and reconstruct heart valves, even in the most difficult cases.

  • Complex Cancer or Reoperative Surgery

Cardiothoracic surgeons perform surgeries to remove lung cancer, offering advanced reoperative (repeat) surgeries if cancer returns.

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Surgery

In this surgery, your surgeon takes an artery or vein from another part of your body and grafts (moves) it over a blocked artery in your heart, improving blood flow and preventing a heart attack.

  • Endovascular Surgery of the Ascending or Descending Aorta

During minimally invasive endovascular surgeries, our surgeons can repair aneurysms (weak areas) in the walls of the aorta, preventing a life-threatening aneurysm rupture.

  • Heart Transplant

When heart function cannot be improved, receiving a new heart from a donor can help you live a longer life.

  • Hybrid Coronary Revascularization

In this specialized procedure, surgeons and interventional cardiologists work together to improve blood flow to the heart using stents (tiny tubes), a minimally invasive procedure, and CABG.

  • Hybrid Aortic Surgery

Hybrid aortic surgeries use both minimally invasive and open procedures to repair aortic aneurysms, giving high-risk patients more treatment options.

  • Laser Dead Pacemaker Extraction

In this minimally invasive procedure, your surgeon can safely remove and replace a pacemaker or pacemaker lead (wires) using specialized tools.

  • Left Ventricular Remodeling

When your left ventricle (a chamber of the heart) is damaged by a health condition, our physicians can use advanced procedures to reshape the ventricle and improve its ability to pump blood.

  • Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS)

If your heart cannot pump blood or you are undergoing a surgery in which your heart must be stopped, we use advanced MCS to keep your blood flowing through your body.

  • Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery

Our surgeons perform many different minimally invasive heart surgeries that have fewer risks and faster recoveries than open heart surgeries.

  • MitraClip Procedures

The MitraClip is a special device that your doctor can implant in your heart during a minimally invasive procedure. The MitraClip improves heart function by preventing the mitral valve from leaking.

  • Myotomy and Myectomy

During these surgical procedures, your cardiothoracic surgeon will remove or cut part of your heart muscle to help improve your heart’s ability to pump blood.

  • Regenerative Medicine Clinical Trials

These advanced clinical trials use stem cell therapy, gene therapy, and matrix therapy techniques to treat heart conditions.

  • Reoperative Aortic, Heart, or Lung Surgery

Because some heart and lung conditions can continue to get worse even after heart surgery, our surgeons provide specialized reoperative (repeat) procedures to improve your quality of life.

  • Robotic Lung Surgery

Using the da Vinci robotic surgery system, our cardiothoracic surgeons can perform minimally invasive lung surgeries with just a few small incisions.

  • Robotic Thymectomy

Our expert surgeons can use robotic surgery techniques to remove all or part of the thymus gland in the chest.

  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

In this minimally invasive procedure, our interventional cardiologists can replace the aortic valve using a small incision in the groin and specialized tools.

  • Valve Surgery

During valve surgeries, our cardiothoracic surgeons can replace or repair damaged heart valves to improve heart function.

  • Cardiac Catheterization

This procedure uses a catheter threaded through veins into the heart to see inside the heart, measure pressures, and look at blood vessels to help determine therapy options. UHealth is home to the Elaine and Sydney Sussman Cardiac Catheterization Lab, which provides advanced imaging capabilities and pinpoint accuracy for new and complex procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), mitral valve repair, and other minimally invasive procedures, such as valvuloplasty and other coronary and peripheral vascular interventions.

  • Echocardiography

Sound waves create a moving picture of your heart and provide information about the size and shape of your heart and how well your heart chambers and valves are working. The test also can identify areas of poor blood flow to the heart, areas of heart muscle that aren't contracting normally, and previous injury to the heart muscle caused by poor blood flow.

  • Transthoracic Echocardiogram

In this test, a device (transducer) is pressed firmly against your skin and aims an ultrasound beam through your chest to your heart, producing moving images of the workings of the heart.
