Regain Your Confidence with Pelvic Floor Therapy

At UHealth Comprehensive Women’s Health Alliance, our mission is to provide compassionate care for women experiencing pelvic floor issues. We recognize the sensitive nature of these concerns and are committed to helping women of all ages feel comfortable discussing their pelvic health needs. In addition, our experts offer individualized treatments designed to address the unique challenges associated with pelvic floor dysfunction, empowering you to regain control of your health and well-being.

What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy focusing on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues surrounding the pelvic region. These muscles, also known as the pelvic floor, play a crucial role in supporting your pelvic organs, maintaining continence, and contributing to sexual function. Pelvic floor therapy aims to strengthen, relax, or improve the coordination of these muscles to alleviate symptoms and improve overall function.

A typical visit to a pelvic floor therapist starts with discussing your health history and concerns. Next, the therapist may do an exam to check your pelvic muscles. Then, they will teach you exercises or relaxation techniques you can do at home. You might need to see the therapist a few times to learn how to do the exercises correctly and ensure they work for you.

Who Can Benefit from Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy can benefit women of all ages, including those who have recently given birth, those experiencing menopause, and those who have undergone pelvic surgery. It can also be helpful for women who experience urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, straining with bowel movements, pelvic pain, or sexual dysfunction.

Reasons Women Don’t Talk to Their Doctors About Pelvic Floor Therapy

Don’t let these reasons keep you from seeking treatment.

  1. Embarrassment or shame: Pelvic floor issues often involve sensitive and private topics such as sexual function, incontinence, or pain during intercourse. Many women may feel embarrassed or ashamed to discuss these matters with their healthcare providers.
  2. Lack of awareness: Some women may not know that their symptoms are related to pelvic floor dysfunction or that effective treatment options like pelvic floor therapy exist. This lack of awareness can prevent them from seeking help and discussing their concerns with their doctor.
  3. Cultural factors: In some cultures, discussing pelvic health or sexual issues may be considered taboo or inappropriate, leading women to avoid seeking help or discussing their concerns openly.
  4. Fear of judgment or stigma: Women may fear judgment or stigmatization from others, including healthcare professionals, if they discuss their pelvic health issues. This fear can prevent them from seeking the care they need.
  5. Misconceptions about treatment: Some women may have misconceptions about the nature of pelvic floor therapy, such as believing it to be invasive, painful, or ineffective. These misconceptions can make them hesitant to discuss their concerns or consider therapy a viable treatment option.

At UHealth Comprehensive Women’s Health Alliance, we strive to create a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment for women to openly discuss their pelvic health concerns. Our compassionate Women's Nurse Coordinators are here to listen, educate, and guide you through finding the proper treatment for your unique needs.
