You may have erectile dysfunction if you have trouble becoming or staying erect during sex. Erectile dysfunction affects up to 10% of men. It has many causes, including:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Some prescription medicines
- Alcohol or substance abuse
- Sleep problems
- Stress, anxiety, or relationship problems
Erectile dysfunction is largely treatable. Your urologist can help you find the right treatment for the cause of your condition.
Our behavioral health experts can help men who are experiencing sexual dysfunction due to stress, anxiety, relationship problems, or other reasons not related to physical health. Counseling can help you develop a healthier relationship with sex.
Medicines can improve blood flow to the penis to help with erectile dysfunction.
Hormone Replacement Therapy
If you have low testosterone levels, hormone replacement therapy can help you achieve better sexual function or higher libido.
External Vacuum Devices
These devices can help you achieve an erection by pumping blood into the penis.
Penile injections can dilate (widen) the arteries in your penis, allowing them to fill with blood to create an erection.
Microsurgery is a technique that uses tiny instruments and a microscope. Your urologist can improve blood flow to your penis by repairing veins and arteries in the penis or redirecting blood vessels to the area.
Penile Rod Implant
Semi-rigid penile implant rods can help you maintain an erection. These rods are implanted during surgery and allow the penis to be bent upwards or downwards as needed.
Inflatable Penile Implant
During inflatable penile implant surgery, your urologist inserts inflatable cylinders into your penis. These cylinders can be filled with fluid (contained in an implant in your abdomen or scrotum) to create an erection. Fluid can then be released using a valve implanted into the scrotum.
New studies suggest that using low-intensity shockwaves can help promote penis health and treat erectile dysfunction. Shockwaves are delivered through a specialized device.
Your urologist may perform an exam to look for physical problems that may cause erectile dysfunction. Your doctor will also learn about your medical history to try to uncover conditions, medicines, or previous surgeries that may affect your sexual health.
A blood test may reveal low hormone levels or other conditions that cause erectile dysfunction.
Digital Rectal Exam
In this exam, your urologist will insert a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to check the prostate for enlargement. An enlarged prostate may cause erectile dysfunction.
