Pre- and post-transplant patients who experience infections need specialized, advanced care to fight infections. Before an organ transplant, you may be at an increased risk for infection because your body is weakened.

If you have undergone an organ transplant, you must take immunosuppressants (drugs that reduce the function of your immune system). These medicines can put you at a higher risk for serious infections.

An infectious disease physician can help you stay healthy and overcome infections.

Tests

Blood Test
Blood tests can help doctors identify bacterial, viral, and fungal infections before or after organ transplant. They can also help doctors plan what immunizations you should receive. You may need blood tests every few weeks after your transplant.

Treatments

Immunizations
If you need an organ transplant, you should receive all immunizations you may need before your transplant. You may also need booster shots after your transplant.

Prophylactic Medicines
You may take certain medicines to prevent infections from developing after surgery. These medicines differ for every patient, but may include antibiotics, antiviral medicines, or antifungal medicines.
