Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common conditions that affect your bladder or urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder and out of your body).

Urinary tract infections can cause pelvic pain, pain when urinating, or blood in the urine. UTIs are more common in women and older adults.

Tests

Urine Testing
A physician can examine a sample of your urine for signs of infection such as bacteria.

Treatments

Antibiotics
If bacteria caused your urinary tract infection, an antibiotic could help stop the infection.

Lifestyle Changes
Healthy habits can help prevent UTIs. These habits include wiping correctly after using the bathroom, drinking plenty of fluids, cleaning your genitals after sex, and taking showers instead of baths. Women should also avoid douching or other feminine hygiene products like sprays or washes.
