Program Overview

The Jackson Memorial Hospital/Jackson Health Systems Orthopaedic Sports Medicine fellowship program is an ACGME accredited 1-year program located in Miami, FL and affiliated to the University of Miami. The fellow anchors the Sports Medicine service at University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute along with residents from the Jackson Memorial Hospital Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. Program faculty comprise the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute, based at the Lennar Foundation Medical Center in Coral Gables, FL. This state-of-the-art facility opened in December 2016 and is located on the undergraduate campus of the University of Miami and is adjacent to the Hurricane’s athletic facilities. The fellow is directly involved with the care of patients at the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute practice locations and the Jackson Memorial Hospital Sports Medicine clinic. As the official medical provider for all University of Miami Athletics and the Miami Marlins, the fellow is also directly involved in the care of these athletes. There are no call or moonlighting responsibilities.

Goals and Characteristics

The goal of the fellowship is to provide our fellows with complete, well-rounded sports medicine training experience in order to best prepare them for a career as sports medicine specialists. Fellows are exposed to a broad spectrum of common and complex knee, shoulder, hip, and elbow conditions in both adult and pediatric patients. This includes multi-ligament knee, patellofemoral, cartilage restoration, UCL reconstruction, shoulder arthroplasty, and hip arthroscopy. In addition to operative and non-operative training in these conditions, he/she will gain exposure to acute concussion management and other common on-field injuries. Team coverage includes exposure to both professional and NCAA Division I athletes. The faculty members are the team physicians for the Miami Marlins Baseball Club and the University of Miami Hurricanes athletic department, which provides fellows with extensive experience evaluating and treating acute sports injuries in the elite athlete. In addition to team coverage exposure, collaborative research experiences through the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute allow for the fellow to continue with academic or private practice pursuits as a competent physician. Dedicated research time is incorporated into the fellow's weekly schedule to allow for development of clinical or basic science research, with presentation and publication of this research as the final goal.
