Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a long-lasting skin disorder that is triggered by an allergic reaction. It causes red to brownish-gray, dry, scaly rashes that itch, and can be accompanied by asthma or hay fever. If you have eczema, it probably began during your childhood, as this disorder is less likely to develop when you’re an adult.

Your symptoms may vary in severity and look different from others affected by eczema. Symptoms of eczema can flare periodically and then clear up for a time, even for several years. Below are some of the most common symptoms:

• Itching, which may be severe, especially at night
• Red to brownish-gray rashes or patches, especially on the hands, feet, ankles, wrists, neck, upper chest, eyelids, inside the bend of the elbows and knees, and, in infants, the face and scalp
• Small, raised bumps, which may leak fluid and crust over when scratched
• Thickened, cracked, dry, scaly skin
• Raw, sensitive, swollen skin from scratching

Treatments

Skin Care
Your dermatologist will advise you of the best ways to care for your skin that may help minimize flare-ups and associated discomfort.

Oral Medication
Your dermatologist may prescribe an oral (taken by mouth) medication that can help control the underlying allergic reaction and reduce bothersome symptoms related to eczema.

Ointment or Cream
You may want to apply appropriate ointment, cream, or lotion to your skin to help reduce itching and rash.

Light Therapy
In more extreme cases of eczema, your dermatologist may recommend light therapy to help reduce rashes related to this condition and to control itching.

Tests

Physical Exam
Through a medical examination of your skin, we can accurately diagnose eczema and determine the best way to treat it.

Blood Test or Patch Test
We may conduct a blood test or patch test. A patch test places small amounts of allergens on your skin to see if there is a reaction.

Biopsy
To confirm the diagnosis and cause of your eczema, we may remove a small section of the affected skin (biopsy) and send it to a laboratory for analysis.
