Hair disorders are a category of conditions that includes the following:

  • Alopecia: causes hair loss all over your head or in circular areas. You may also experience loss of lashes, eyebrows, or pubic hair.
  • Male pattern baldness: some degree of hair loss affects about half of all men over 50 years of age. It’s the most common hair disorder.
  • Hirsutism: a disorder in which adult women have excessive male pattern hair growth, irregular menstruation, lack of ovulation, acne, deepening voice, balding, and genital abnormalities.
  • Hair shaft disorders: these are generally hereditary abnormalities of the hair shaft that cause split ends and hair that is dry, brittle, and coarse.

Treatments

Steroid Medications
Your dermatologist may prescribe a topical or injectable steroid medication to treat your hair disorder.

Oral Contraceptives
If you have hirsutism, your dermatologist may prescribe an oral contraceptive (birth control) to try to regulate your menstruation and trigger ovulation.

Other Medications
Your dermatologist may prescribe other medications for hair regrowth and possibly to prevent further hair loss, as well as to treat underlying diseases that can cause the bothersome symptoms.

Cosmetic Surgery
You may consider surgical placement of follicle supporting plugs or folds that can help regrow hair.

Tests

Physical Exam
Through a thorough exam of your hair and scalp, your dermatologist can make a diagnosis of your hair disorder.

Blood Test
Your dermatologist may order a blood test to check for hormone levels and other factors that can indicate or cause your hair disorder.
