Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside your bones that helps create red blood cells. Certain blood cancers or blood disorders can cause unhealthy blood cells to develop. Bone marrow transplants help replace unhealthy bone marrow.
Our hematology experts use bone marrow transplants as treatment for many conditions, including cancers, sickle cell anemia, and more. This advanced treatment isn’t widely available in the region.
Who is a Candidate?
Many people may benefit from an adult bone marrow transplant. If you have one of these conditions, speak to your doctor about the risks and benefits of a bone marrow transplant:
What to Expect
The first step in receiving a bone marrow transplant is to determine whether you will receive bone marrow from a donor or use your own stem cells. If you receive bone marrow from a donor, your doctor will use a national database to find a donor for you. Your family members may also be tested to see if they are a match. A simple blood or saliva test can determine if they can donate bone marrow to you.
If you use your own stem cells, your doctor will need to harvest these cells from your bone marrow using a specialized needle.
Once bone marrow has been harvested, you will undergo chemotherapy. Chemotherapy can help rid your body of cancer cells or abnormal blood cells. After your chemotherapy is complete, you will receive the stem cells from the bone marrow through a blood transfusion.
Over time, these healthy cells will multiply, improving your symptoms or, in some cases, curing your condition. You will receive supportive care to prevent infections and manage any symptoms as you recover from your transplant.
