Having back surgery doesn’t necessarily mean setting aside months of your life to recover.

Whenever possible, UHealth spine surgeons use minimally invasive surgical techniques to minimize your pain, and reduce hospital stay and recovery time. When considering spine surgery, your surgeon will explain the pros and cons of minimally-invasive surgery and determine if you are candidate.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is less painful and offers you a quicker healing time by causing less damage to surrounding tissues. It also means you have a less noticeable scar than you would get from a traditional surgery. In fact, it is sometimes as small as two centimeters.

Since UHealth offers the greatest variety of MIS procedures in Florida, we are more than likely to have the right minimally invasive alternative that works for your needs.

Our surgeons have the most comprehensive array of highly-specialized, innovative technology and instruments for MIS procedures in the state, including:

  • Spinal endoscope for reducing incision size
  • Tubular dilator retractor systems to minimize tissue destruction
  • High resolution microscopes to improve visualization
  • O-arm® for intraoperative CT scanning
  • Mazor Renaissance™ Spine Robot to increase surgical precision
  • Advanced practice providers

What to Expect

At UHealth, minimally invasive spine surgery is precision medicine at its finest. Everyone experiences back pain and nerve dysfunction differently. Our spine surgeons focus on the specific cause and location of your back condition. We are here to relieve your symptoms with as little impact to your body as possible.

When you choose UHealth for your neck or back pain, you will be taken care of by a passionate, knowledgeable and comprehensive team of medical professionals who want to ensure that you receive the right treatment for your unique condition. Your team includes:

  • Neurosurgeons
  • Neurologists
  • Neuroscience investigators
  • Intensivists
  • Pain rehabilitation specialists
  • Advanced practice providers

We are some of the most experienced surgeons in South Florida in surgical technology so we can offer our patients the best in minimally invasive spine surgeries. These procedures are used to address spine problems like herniated discs or spinal stenosis.

Common procedures include:

  • Discectomy
  • Artificial disc replacement
  • Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF) and Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF)
  • Laminectomy

We consistently utilize techniques and industry-leading innovation to ensure spine patients receive the best care and outcomes.

O-Arm® Surgical Imaging System. During your spinal procedure, a noninvasive scanner with an o-shaped arm provides 3D images so surgeons can make adjustments at the time of surgery, improving safety and accuracy. This means:

  • Less time in surgery
  • Smaller incisions
  • Reduced risk of repeat surgery
  • Less radiation exposure from imaging
  • Better outcomes, thanks to safer, more accurate placement of instruments

Mazor Renaissance™ Spine Robot. Every person’s spine is different, which means that their back-pain problem is unique to them and therefore requires a surgical procedure that is specially tailored to fix their issues. The Mazor spine robot allows surgeons to do that before they even step into the operating room. This innovative new tool for minimally invasive spine procedures creates a “map” or “blueprint” of your spine using X-rays and MRIs that guide your specially trained surgeon during your procedure. Rest assured, regardless of the advanced technology, your surgeon is always in control.

Benefits of the Mazor Renaissance™ Spine Robot:

  • Better surgical accuracy
  • Less use of fluoroscopy
  • Lower complication rates
