You may need surgery to treat your gynecologic condition and improve your quality of life. The latest gynecologic surgeries use minimally invasive techniques that improve your condition with fewer risks than traditional surgeries.

University of Miami Health gynecologists offer advanced and effective minimally invasive and robotic surgeries to care for a wide range of gynecologic conditions. Our expert doctors are leading experts in these surgical procedures, helping women experience less pain and faster recoveries after surgery.

Who Is a Candidate?

Most women who have been diagnosed with a gynecologic condition that requires surgical treatment will be a good candidate for minimally invasive procedures. Our doctors can use minimally invasive surgeries to treat conditions including:

  • Adenomyosis (thickening of the walls of the uterus)
  • Endometriosis
  • Gynecologic cancers
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic floor disorders
  • Uterine fibroids

You and your doctor can discuss if surgery is the most effective treatment option for you.

What to Expect

During minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries, including laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, your gynecologist uses only a few small incisions. They use specialized tools, such as a laparoscope (small camera), to carefully complete your procedure.

Because minimally invasive surgeries use smaller incisions than traditional open surgeries that use large incisions, you may see benefits such as:

  • Faster recovery time
  • Less time in the hospital (sometimes going home the same day as your surgery)
  • Less pain
  • Less blood loss and need for blood transfusion
  • Lower medical costs
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Less visible scars

At the University of Miami Health System, our experienced gynecologists perform the latest robotic surgeries. During robotic surgeries, your surgeon controls each aspect of surgery, making more delicate motions than they could by hand. We perform a variety of robotic surgeries, including:

  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy for uterine cancer with lymph node sampling
  • Laparoscopic radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer
  • Myomectomy

Our expert gynecologists also perform a variety of in-office procedures, saving you time and making your care more convenient. In-office procedures include:

  • Colposcopy to examine the cervix
  • Endometrial ablation to treat heavy periods
  • Hysteroscopy to examine the uterus
  • Intrauterine device (IUD) insertion for contraception
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) to remove abnormal tissues in the cervix
  • NEXPLANON® insertion in the arm for contraception
  • Genital warts removal
  • Vulvar biopsy to remove lesions on the vulva
  • Pudendal nerve blocks to treat genital pain

Before any minimally invasive procedure, your gynecologist will talk to you about what to expect, any risks, and any benefits of your treatment.
