Sexually active teenagers face a variety of risks that can lead to unintended pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Impulsivity, lack of planning, and drug and alcohol use can make it less likely that teens will use birth control methods and condoms. That’s why it’s critical they receive trustworthy, honest information about family planning and contraception (birth control).
Adolescent specialists at University of Miami Health System specialize in providing age-appropriate information and education to help teens be responsible and safe. We equip teens, parents, and families with advice and resources to help prevent teen pregnancy and disease.
Who is a Candidate?
If your teen is sexually active or you suspect they are, our adolescent medicine team can provide guidance for family planning and birth control.
What to Expect
Your child meets with one of our adolescent medicine doctors, who will ask questions about your child’s sexual activity and birth control methods. The doctor may prescribe or recommend a method of birth control, such as oral medicine for females or condoms for males. Our team also provides educational materials and resources to help your teenager make smart, informed decisions about family planning and contraception — today and in the future.
