A colonoscopy is a routine screening that checks your colon and anus for polyps, which can be signs of cancer. In most cases, the polyps found during a colonoscopy can be safely removed during that same procedure. However, about 10 - 15% of polyps are larger and need to be removed during another procedure.
Generally, a colorectal polyp is considered to be a complex polyp if it is:
- Larger than 2 centimeters.
- Located in an area that is difficult to reach during the colonoscopy procedure.
- Too flat (sessile) for removal during a typical colonoscopy.
Tests
Colonoscopy
Complex colorectal polyps are discovered during routine colonoscopy screening tests. They can also be removed in most instances during the initial colonoscopy.
Treatments
Surgery
Your colorectal surgeon will remove the complex colorectal polyp with either an endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) or an endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), depending on your exact situation. Sometimes, a combined endoscopic and laparoscopic approach is used to remove benign polyps.
