What is hematospermia?

Hematospermia occurs when blood appears in a man’s ejaculate (semen).

It can have a wide variety of causes, such as:

  • Kidney stones
  • Prostate cancer
  • Recent prostate surgery
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Testicular cancer
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Hematospermia is usually benign (noncancerous), but it’s important for you to talk to your doctor about this condition. Experts at the Desai Sethi Urology Institute can help uncover the cause and provide proper treatment.

Treatments for blood in semen

Medicines
Medicines can be used to treat infections like UTIs or STDs. Once these conditions are treated, the blood in semen should go away.

Surgery
Some causes of hematospermia, such as cancers or structural problems in the urinary tract, may require surgical interventions.

How is hematospermia diagnosed?

Urine Tests
Your doctor may take a sample of your urine to check for conditions that may be affecting your kidneys, bladder, or urinary

Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Testing
STDs are a common cause of hematospermia. Your doctor may test you for different STDs like gonorrhea or chlamydia.

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Testing
If you are over age 40, your doctor may want to complete a PSA test to check for signs of prostate problems.

Physical Exam
Your doctor may perform a digital rectal exam (where a gloved, lubricated finger is inserted into the rectum) to examine your prostate for swelling or other issues as well as a testicular exam to look for lumps on the testes.

Ultrasound
Your doctor may use ultrasound to look for blockages in your urinary tract, tumors, or other problems that could cause hematospermia.

Why Choose UHealth?

Advanced research in men’s health at the Desai Sethi Urology Institute. Our urologists are dedicated to men’s health and conduct innovative research into many conditions. Our expert team has helped develop new minimally invasive and robotic surgical procedures to treat cancers, incontinence, and more. We give you access to leading-edge treatments and clinical trials that aren’t widely available. In addition, we have established the eighth fellowship program in the nation dedicated solely to teaching physicians how to care for men’s health.

Leaders in robotic surgery treatment. We have some of the world’s most experienced robotic surgeons for urologic procedures. In fact, doctors come from all over the world to learn at our Urology Robotic Program — the #1 ranked program in South Florida. The University of Miami Health System was the first academic medical center in the world to get the da Vinci Xi robotic surgery system and has completed more than 5,000 robotic surgeries — procedures that offer less pain and scarring and a faster recovery.

You can rely on our prostate cancer program for advanced, expert care. We are ranked among the top 10 programs in the United States. In addition, our Active Surveillance program, which helps men access safe, conservative cancer care, is the top program in Florida and among the top five programs in the United States. We were also the first hospital in the nation to become fully certified in using Ablatherm robotic high-intensity-focused ultrasound (HIFU) to treat prostate cancer.
