The prostate gland is a gland that only men have and is located directly below the bladder. It produces the fluid that transports sperm (semen). When the prostate gland is swollen and inflamed, this is a condition known as prostatitis. Prostatitis affects men of all ages, but most likely occurs in men under age 50.

In many cases, the cause of prostatitis is unknown. When known, the causes of this condition can include:

  • Bacterial infection
  • Nerve damage to the lower urinary tract due to surgery or trauma

Signs and symptoms of prostatitis can include:

  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Cloudy urine
  • Having to wake up more frequently at night to urinate
  • Increased urinary frequency and urgency
  • Pain in the abdomen, groin, or lower backPain in the area between the scrotum and rectum (perineum)
  • Pain in the penis or testicles
  • Pain when ejaculating
  • Pain while urinating
  • Trouble urinating
  • Urine that is pink in color, indicating the presence of blood

Tests

Physical Exam
Your urologist will perform a comprehensive physical exam – including gathering a medical history – in order to diagnose prostatitis.

Urine Tests
Your doctor may take a sample of your urine to look for signs of infection.

Blood Test
Your urologist may order a blood test to check for signs of infection.

Imaging Tests
Your specialist may order an imaging test – such as a computerized tomography (CT) scan or sonogram – to get a better image of your prostate and urinary tract.

Treatments

Antibiotics
If the condition was caused by a bacterial infection, your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic medicine to treat the underlying infection.

Alpha Blockers
Your doctor may prescribe this type of medicine, which help relax the bladder neck and muscle fibers where the prostate meets the bladder.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
NSAIDs can help relax the prostate and relieve uncomfortable symptoms.
