UTI and Bladder Infection Symptoms

A bladder infection is the most common type of UTI, but not all UTIs are bladder infections. UTIs can affect any part of your urinary tract, including your kidney, ureter, urethra, and bladder. Bladder infections only affect your bladder.

Most UTIs start when bacteria enter through your urethra, grow in your bladder, and cause an infection.

UTI symptoms may include:

  • A burning sensation during urination
  • Fever and chills (in severe infections)
  • Frequent, painful urination — often with only small amounts of urine
  • Lower abdominal pain or pressure
  • Pelvic pain (in women)
  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Urine that's cloudy, red, bright pink, or brown

A bladder infection has some of the same symptoms as a UTI, including:

  • A burning sensation during urination
  • Frequent, painful urination — often with only small amounts of urine
  • Pelvic pain (in women)

FAQs About UTI and Bladder Infection Treatment

Do I need an appointment?

We offer walk-in convenience for your care needs. It can help to call ahead or schedule your appointment in advance. That way, you can check availability and reduce your wait time.

Will insurance cover the cost of treatment?

We accept most insurance plans. Costs depend on your plan, including co-pays and other details. Contact your insurance company to check current coverage. If you’re not insured, we offer affordable options for our self-pay patients.

How long does it take for UTI symptoms to go away?

Your recovery depends on the severity of the UTI and your response to antibiotics. Most feel better within one to two days, with significant relief in two to three days. Take medications as prescribed, even if you feel better, to eliminate bacteria and prevent recurrence, reducing the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Can I get medication immediately?

Yes — most prescriptions can be filled at the Walgreens pharmacy in the same visit. If your provider recommends additional over-the-counter therapies, you can get those as well, in one same-day visit.

Is virtual care available for UTIs?

In most cases, UTIs require in-person diagnosis with a urine test. However, virtual visits may be available to discuss symptoms and next steps.
