We are funded by the Florida Department of Health and the Ryan White CARE Act. This ensures that testing, counseling & outreach are available to all young adults, free of charge.

Miami has the #1 rate of HIV infections in the nation, with individuals 13-24 bearing the largest burden of diagnoses. Young adults are also at risk for other STD, unplanned pregnancies, trafficking, homelessness, substance abuse and other dangerous conditions. ACTS is excellently staffed by medical professionals all under the direction of Lawrence B. Friedman M.D., creating an exceptional & unique clinic centered around integrating education, prevention and treatment.
Lawrence Friedman, M.D.
Dr. Friedman earned his MD degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and completed Pediatrics residency and Adolescent Medicine fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami. He is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, and has maintained a faculty appointment since 1985. Health care of teenagers and young adults, as well as their transition to adult specialty services, fall within his medical purview. Teaching of students from a variety of professional disciplines about primary medical care, health research involving youth, consent and confidentiality precepts for the age group, growth and developmental influences, communication and engagement, sexuality and sexual identification, and medical morbidities remain active interests. He is a recognized expert in the care of youth generally, and those HIV-infected particularly, as designated by the Florida Department of Health and its Children’s Medical Services program.
Alex Moreno, MPH
Alex Moreno has served as the Clinical Program Manager of ACTS since 2004. Fell into this field of work after losing friends to the HIV/AIDS pandemic by producing a rock video called The Gift by singer/songwriter Diane Ward. Stayed in this much needed cause because he is sick of seeing data that shows Miami is #1 in the nation in HIV infection rates. When not working he is the proud dad of his daughter Ava.
Chelsea Chico
Chelsea Chico has been involved with the ACTS clinic as an outreach coordinator & counselor since January 2017. She just graduated the University of Miami with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. Chelsea wants to further her studies in the medical field in hope she can make a difference in someone’s life. One fun fact about Chelsea is that she enjoys making art in her free time.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The University of Miami-Department of Adolescent Medicine, is one of three national sites participating in the Young Men’s Health Project (YMHP). YMHP is an HIV negative risk reduction/intervention program conducted in conjunction with ATN and PRIDE. Participants must be between the ages of 15 and 24 years old. Additional eligibility criteria includes being an HIV negative man who has sex with men, and has recently used drugs and/or alcohol.
Once enrolled, participants partake in four intervention sessions with a community health worker where they discuss their thoughts on topics related to sexuality, sexual health, substance use and HIV. Compensation for full participation is 290 dollars. The purpose of the study is to deliver and test an HIV risk reduction/intervention program known as YMHP. YMHP has shown to be effective in research settings. This study examines how the program works in “real life clinics” or remotely (over the phone or video chat).
