Dear Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Stem Cell Transplant Community:

We know you are all aware of the arrival of a new viral infection called COVID-19 here in the US. Here are some simple measures to avoid infection:

  • Stay away from people who are ill. Avoid sick friends and family members.
  • Wash hands frequently for a minimum of 20 seconds. Hand wash is preferable but when unable to do so use hand sanitizer.
  • If you think you were in contact with a person known to have COVID-19, or you are ill notify your medical team before visiting the hospital or clinic and wear a mask upon arrival.
  • Try not to touch your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home as much as possible. If you must go out, avoid crowds and try to remain 6 feet away from other people. Avoid travel out of the area.
  • Ask about obtaining extra necessary medications to have on hand in case you need to stay home for a prolonged period of time during the peak of the outbreak. If you cannot get extra medications, consider mail order options.
  • Be sure you have over-the-counter medicines and medical supplies (tissues, etc.) to treat fever and other symptoms.
  • Have enough household items and groceries on hand so that you will be prepared to stay at home for a period of time. Make plans to get food brought to your home through family and friends or delivery services.
  • To the extent possible, avoid touching high-touch surfaces in public places – elevator buttons, door handles, handrails, etc. Use a tissue or your sleeve to cover your hand. If you must touch something, wash your hands right away.
  • Clean and disinfect your home to remove germs from frequently touched surfaces (tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks & cell phones).

Watch for symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. If you feel like you are developing early symptoms, call the transplant team at 305-243-7000. Please call 911 if you experience severe signs of disease including difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, bluish lips or face, and new confusion or unresponsiveness.
