A hearing aid may help you recover some of your hearing if you have experienced hearing loss. Hearing aids carry sounds from your environment into your ear to make them louder. Most modern hearing aids are digital and are powered by a hearing aid battery. Many are very small and discreet.
There are several types of hearing aids available today, including:
- Behind the ear (BTE): hooks over the top of the ear, resting behind the ear
- Cochlear implant (CI): surgically implanted device for severe hearing loss
- Completely in the canal (CIC): smallest type of hearing aid is molded to fit inside your ear canal
- In the canal (ITC): partially in the ear canal
- In the ear (ITE): may fill the bowl-shaped area of the outer ear (full shell) or may fill only the lower part of the outer ear (half shell)
- Open fit: fits behind the ear and captures sound via a thin tube
- Receiver in canal or receiver in ear: fits behind the ear and captures sound via a tiny wire

What to Expect
You will work with your ear, nose, and throat specialist to determine which type of hearing aid will work best for you. You will order your hearing aid and then return to the clinic at a later date to be fitted for it. Expect an adjustment period, during which you will get used to hearing with the aid.
